2006 Mercedes SLR McLaren

 At the 1999 North American International Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled their Vision SLR Concept, designed to pay homage to the historic 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe of 1955. The reception of this concept was overwhelmingly positive, and in 2005, Mercedes-Benz brought it to life as a limited-run production model.

At the time, Mercedes-Benz owned 40% of McLaren Group, and the two companies were racing partners in Formula One. The Mercedes SLR McLaren was produced as a collaboration between the two companies, with Mercedes completing all of the styling and McLaren handling everything else. Production of the SLR coupe spanned just three years, running from 2005 to 2007. Additional variants were produced until 2010, but only 2,157 coupes were sold in total, and the production year of 2006 consisted of just 261 units.

Under the hood, the SLR received a supercharged, 5.4-liter V8 from AMG that produced 617 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque. Mated to the five-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT R automatic transmission, the SLR could run from 0-60mph in a tested 3.4 seconds and reach a reported top speed of 207 mph. For better weight distribution and handling improvements, the engine was moved almost a meter back, giving the SLR a front-mid-engined layout.

To match the performance, the SLR was given a striking but functional exterior design. Cues to the original 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe include aggressive side vents behind the front wheels, quad-tip side-exit exhaust, and gullwing-reminiscent doors. Additional aerodynamic features include an active rear spoiler, a flat underbody, and a large rear diffuser for increased downforce.

The interior is classic Mercedes, complete with carbon-backed bucket seats and a traditional three-spoke AMG steering wheel. The ‘SLR’ badge adorns the leather-wrapped dashboard, and a center-mounted gear selector houses a unique feature: a flap atop the selector hides the engine start button, adding flair to the experience and invoking feelings of a fighter pilot.
