Description

In October of 1972, at the Paris Motor Show, Porsche launched a highly significant and specialized version of the 911: the 911 Carrera RS 2.7. Developed as a homologation special for Group 4 racing, only 500 units were initially planned for production. A stripped down, more powerful version of the 911 at that time, the 2.7 RS was the fastest German production car built to date. From that date forward, the RS moniker on a Porsche 911 meant serious business.

Then, in 1991, after almost 20 years of radio silence, the RS badge was revived at the Geneva Motor Show by way of the all-new 964 911 Carrera RS. Based on the 964 911 Carrera 2 but derived from the Carrera Cup, the Carrera RS was developed as a rear-wheel-drive homologation special to qualify the Carrera Cup for the N-GT class of racing. Just like the 1972 RS that came before it, the 964 Carrera RS was a lightweight, more powerful version of the Carrera 2, and only 1,000 units were planned for production. Upgrades included stiffer Bilstein suspension, bigger brakes, new lightweight magnesium wheels, and a lightweight flywheel. Engine output rose from 250 to 260 bhp and 229 to 240 lb-ft of torque. The interior was stripped of almost all creature comforts, including the rear seats, power windows, airbags, and most of the sound deadening material. The side and rear glass was thinner than standard, and the driver and passenger seats were replaced with fiberglass Recaro bucket seats wrapped in a thin layer of leather. The result of all of this meant that the Carrera RS weighed approximately 100 kilograms less than the standard Carrera 2. Due to the aggressive nature of the car and lack of certain safety equipment, the 964 Carrera RS was only developed for the European market and was never initially sold in America.

Now offered for sale, Blue Chip is proud to present this 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera RS finished in gorgeous Maritime Blue over a Black leather interior. This Italian-market example was imported to the US in 2017 and was purchased by the current owner in 2020. Under current ownership, this 964 RS has spent the past three years in Colorado and has been meticulously cared for by Blue Chip Services. Recent service records indicate that an engine oil service, brake fluid flush, clutch fluid flush, and gearbox fluid flush were all performed in September of 2023. Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires were installed on all four wheels in July of 2021 and have seen just over 150 miles since installation.

Notable exterior features include a retractable rear spoiler, European-spec bumpers, and a single-exit exhaust. Additional RS-specific details include flared wheel arches to accommodate 17” magnesium Cup Design wheels finished in Silver, as well as a lower ride height, manual side mirrors, and a Carrera RS model badge in Black.

The cabin houses fiberglass Recaro full-bucket seats which have been trimmed in Black leather and feature quad-color blue seat inserts, as well as color-coordinated Maritime seat belts. The RS moniker meant the deletion of the rear seats, which were replaced by black carpet trim with the Carrera RS insignia stitched in Maritime on the rear carpeted section. Lightweight door panels are finished in Black leather and are punctuated by color-matching Maritime door latch pulls straps, as well as the deletion of the standard armrests and cargo pockets. Black leather extends to the gear selector and the dashboard along with a four-spoke steering wheel, which bears the RS logo and frames a 6,800-rpm tachometer and 300 km/h speedometer.

With just 30,650 km displayed on the odometer, this original-condition, Maritime Blue 964 Carrera RS is now available in Denver, Colorado and comes complete with two keys, Italian importation documents, Italian service records, US service records, and a clean Colorado title.
