The 964 Carrera RS was produced for twelve months between the summer of 1991 and 1992, with 2,282 examples manufactured in total — of these, 1,916 were built to standard M001 specification. The Carrera RS was not sold in the United States, making Japanese-market examples among the most naturally preserved and well-documented survivors in existence — cars that spent their early lives in a market with a strong culture of meticulous ownership and mechanical care.

The 964 Carrera RS was created to qualify a lighter, more powerful 911 for the N/GT class of racing, requiring 1,000 cars to be built within a twelve-month period — and each began with a bodyshell featuring a reinforced floor and strengthened mounts for the rear suspension, transmission, and anti-roll bars. The engineering brief was singular: remove everything that didn't contribute to performance, and sharpen everything that did. The bonnet was made from aluminum, the side and rear windows from lighter, thinner-gauge glass. Sound-insulating interior mats were removed, the front fog lamps replaced with transparent covers, and even the rust-preventative undercoat was omitted. Power steering, power windows, rear seats, electronically adjustable front seats, and front armrests were all deleted. The result was a car approximately 300 pounds lighter than the Carrera 2 from which it was derived — a reduction that transformed the fundamental character of the driving experience rather than merely adjusting it at the margins.

Power comes from the M64/03 flat-six — a more highly developed version of the standard 964 engine — featuring matched pistons and cylinders, remapped Bosch Motronic engine management, a lightweight single-mass flywheel saving 7 kilograms, and solid rubber rather than hydraulic engine mounts. Output is 260 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 240 lb-ft of torque, transmitted through the G50/10 five-speed manual gearbox with shortened ratios and an asymmetric limited-slip differential. The suspension was lowered 50mm at the front and 40mm at the rear, with Bilstein dampers replacing the standard Boge units, aluminum hubs in place of steel, adjustable anti-roll bars at both ends, and ball joints for the upper spring strut mounts — a chassis setup drawn directly from the Carrera Cup race car and made road-legal with the minimum of compromise.

There are no electronic traction or stability systems beyond ABS — the RS communicates grip level through the steering, the pedals, and the seat with a directness that contemporary performance cars, with their layers of electronic mediation, have made increasingly rare. The 964 RS is widely regarded as the purest expression of the air-cooled 911's essential character — a car whose simplicity, mechanical integrity, and driving engagement have only become more valuable as the cars that succeeded it became progressively more sophisticated and, in doing so, more remote from what made the 911 worth caring about in the first place.
