Description

The Porsche 356, Porsche’s inaugural production vehicle, has captivated enthusiasts and celebrities alike since its debut in 1948. Its lightweight and nimble design epitomizes Ferdinand 'Ferry' Porsche’s philosophy: “If you have enough power in a small car, it is nicer to drive than if you have a big car which is also overpowered. And it is more fun!”

This 1961 Porsche 356B Super 90 Coupé represents the pinnacle of the model's evolution. By 1961, Porsche had perfected the 356's elegant design, which had become iconic. The 356B introduced enhancements such as raised headlamps, an upgraded gearbox and brakes, redesigned rear seats, and a larger rear window—boosting comfort, handling, and driveability.

Equipped with four-wheel independent suspension and a manual four-speed gearbox, the 356B showcased Porsche’s engineering prowess. The Super 90 variant, in particular, stands out with its upgraded 1.6-liter air-cooled, four-cylinder engine. This engine featured a new intake manifold, larger twin carburetors, a higher compression ratio, and an improved crankshaft, delivering 90 brake horsepower—double the power of the earliest 356s.

Now offered by Blue Chip, this 1961 356B Super 90 comes with a copy of its factory Kardex sheet, detailed service invoices, and documentation since nearly new. This example is an unrestored, factory sunroof coupe, and wears matching decklids with numbers present. The odometer now reads 47,487 miles, total mileage unknown. The engine is a 1.6 liter flat four with Weber carburettors and is not matching numbers. The car is finished in factory correct Signal Red over a Black interior, with reupholstered seats and dashboard. All of the chrome trim is original, and the glass is all original with the exception of the passenger vent window. This car has been under the ownership of a single family for the last 50 years and has spent the majority of its life in California.
